Spencer Beckwith covers the performing arts in Northern and Central New Mexico.  From 2004 through March of 2014, he hosted and produced KUNM's "Performance New Mexico," a weekday morning program that included announcements from the KUNM Arts Calendar, as well as interviews with musicians, writers and performers. Since April of 2014, Spencer has contributed semimonthly segments on the performing arts to KUNM's weekend news shows.

The Taos Chamber Music Group Opens Its 20th Season

Thurs. 9/20 10a:  Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Chick Corea, Maximo Diego Pujol, Manuel de Falla, Eric Ewazen and Ricky Ian Gordon opens the 20th anniversary season of the Taos Chamber Music Group, September 22 and 23 at the Harwood Museum of Art.  Spencer Beckwith talks with the Founder and Artistic Director of the Taos Chamber Music Group, flutist Nancy Laupheimer.

"Too Much Coffee Man Opera"

Wed. 9/19 10a:  A work based on Shannon Wheeler's popular comic strip, "Too Much Coffee Man," is on stage in the Anna Kaseman Hall at Albuquerque's Cathedral of St. John, September 21 and 22 and October 5 and 6.  Spencer Beckwith talks with Daniel Steven Crafts, the composer of "Too Much Coffee Man Opera," about what Crafts calls a "gonzo opera."

The New Mexico Philharmonic: Mahler's Resurrection Symphony

"Journeys" in Dance and Discourse at the N4th Theater

"One Hundred Years of Hispanic Culture" at the National Hispanic Cultural Center

Fri. 9/07 10a:  Celebrating both Hispanic Heritage Month and the New Mexico State Centennial, the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque invites the community to a day of festivities on September 9.  All the buildings on the NHCC campus will be open to the public and there will be two stages of live music, dance and spoken word.  Host Spencer Beckwith gets a preview of the celebration from musician Donny Tesso and the NHCC's Joseph Wasson.

The Santa Fe Symphony's New Season

Fri. 8/31 10a:   The Founder and General Director of the Santa Fe Symphony, Greg Heltman, joins Spencer Beckwith to discuss the Symphony's 2012-2013 season.   The Symphony is joined by violinist Phillipe Quint and pianist Haochen Zhang for a special pre-season Tchaikovsky concert on September 9 at the Lensic Performing Arts Center, and the regular Symphony season runs from September 30 through May 19, 2013.

The Santa Fe Opera: "King Roger"

Fri. 8/3 8a:  This summer, the Santa Fe Opera becomes the first major American opera company to present "King Roger," Polish composer Karol Szymanowski’s 1926 masterwork.  On a special half-hour Performance New Mexico, we explore the production, with the star of "King Roger," Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, conductor Evan Rogister and director Stephen Wadsworth.  Performances of "King Roger" at the Santa Fe Opera continue through August 14.
