Navajo Council Senate Endorsement in Dispute

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico's U.S. Senate candidates are sparring over who has the support of the Navajo Nation Council.

Republican Heather Wilson says the council endorsed her after Speaker Johnny Naize sent her a letter last month praising her energy policies.

Democrat Martin Heinrich countered this week that the council voted to endorse him. He put out a release this week with a statement from delegate Russell Begaye that the council had voted to support Heinrich because of his "unwavering support for Social Security, veterans benefits, and Indian health care--issues of great importance to Navajo.

But Tom Platero, director of the council's Office of Legislative Services, tells the Albuquerque Journal (http://bitly.com/YrUwMJ) the resolution endorsing Heinrich was approved by the Navajo Nation Council's Committee of the Whole, but needs one more vote during a general session to become final.
