There’s been so much media attention focused on the Ebola crisis in West Africa and whether the healthcare system in the U.S. is ready for cases here, it’s easy to forget that the U.S. flu season has begun. Each year thousands of people in the U.S. die from the flu, tens of thousands in bad years. Last year there were 34 flu-related deaths in New Mexico.

According to the CDC, it’s nearly impossible to predict how severe a flu season will be because it changes every year, but Kenny Vigil with the New Mexico Department of Health, says at least one thing is for sure, “Getting a flu shot is important because it is the best way to protect yourself from flu.”

The department recommends getting a flu shot as soon as possible and Vigil says don’t let fears about money hold you back.

Free flu shots are available from the UNM Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque in the coming weeks as well as at La Familia Medical Center in Santa Fe.
