Costumes with Controversy
By LeeMerrill
Wed. 10/31 11a: Every year on and around Halloween, controversy around inappropriate costumes finds a small place in the media landscape.
Dozens of Halloween outlets offer authentic costumes with kitschy titles such as "Running Bear Princess," "Sexy Indian Snow Princess," "Black Hawk Brave" and "Sassy Squaw."
Does using the word costume when referring to traditional dress or regalia trivialize Native culture? While donning a blackface is socially unacceptable, why is dressing as an American Indian okay? Why do people want to play Indian?
