Apprenticeship programs across the country are getting an infusion of cash.  The U.S. Department of Labor divided a record $175 million between 46 apprenticeship and trade institutions across the country.  The grants represent the largest award towards apprenticeships in U.S. history.

Central New Mexico Community College was awarded $2.9 million and is the only school in New Mexico to receive a portion of the funds.

“The award provides us the opportunity to create an apprenticeship program at the college for students to work within IT career pathways,” said Samantha Sengel, CNM’s Chief Community Engagement officer.

Approximately 4,000 students study Information Technology at CNM. The federal funding is going to sponsor 300 on-site apprenticeships over the next five years, as well as aid interested employers.

Sengel says there are already 12 organizations interested in accepting IT apprentices including the state of New Mexico, the city of Albuquerque and some out of state companies.

“This is such an important infusion of funds to support student opportunity,” Sengel said, “as well as grow jobs and a highly skilled workforce in New Mexico.”

This will be the first Information Technology Apprentice program in New Mexico.
