Watchdog Says Nuclear Storage Boom Unlikely

Supporters of a plan to profit from nuclear waste storage in southern New Mexico said this week that they hope to start collecting spent fuel rods from nuclear power plants soon.  However, a recent decision from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission doesn’t eliminate all of the hurdles that the group would have to clear before there’s a chance of that actually happening.

Two southeastern New Mexico counties could get a new nuclear-related project thanks to a ruling by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The Hobbs News-Sun reports the NRC last month approved a plan for the continued storage of used nuclear fuel onsite at nuclear power plants.

This action could open the door in Lea and Eddy counties for a long-term interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel.
