Twice A Month During KUNM's Broadcast Of NPR's "Weekend Edition Saturday"

Spencer Beckwith covers the performing arts in Northern and Central New Mexico.  From 2004 through March of 2014, he hosted and produced KUNM's "Performance New Mexico," a weekday morning program that included announcements from the KUNM Arts Calendar, as well as interviews with musicians, writers and performers. Since April of 2014, Spencer has contributed semimonthly segments on the performing arts to KUNM's weekend news shows.

The Figueroa Music and Arts Project: "The Firebird and Tchaikovsky"

Fri. 11/1 10a:  Spencer Beckwith is joined by conductor and violinist Guillermo Figueroa for a look at the opening program of The Figueroa Project's third season.  Maestro Figueroa's symphony orchestra is joined by dancers from Festival Ballet Albuquerque for Stravinsky's "The Firebird" and Tchaikovsky's "Serenade for Strings."  The program is presented November 2 and 3 at Albuquerque's National Hispanic Cultural Center.

A Dia de los Muertos Celebration at Albuquerque's KiMo Theater

The Albuquerque Tango Festival

Wed. 10/30 10a:  Almost 700 tango lovers from around the country are expected in Albuquerque from October 31 through November 3 for classes, workshops and Argentine dance parties known as "milongas."  The 4th annual Albuquerque Tango Festival is based at the Hotel Albuquerque near Old Town.  Spencer Beckwith speaks with the organizer of the Festival, Daniel Boardman.

"The Majesty of Music & Mathematics"

Wed. 10/25 10a:  The Santa Fe Symphony continues its collaboration with the Santa Fe Institute for a multimedia concert on November 2 at the Lensic Center.  Using scientific demonstrations as well as the music of Bach, Brahms, Richard Strauss, John Williams and John Adams, the program looks at the close relationship between music and mathematics.   Spencer Beckwith is joined by mathematician Cris Moore of the Santa Fe Institute for a preview of the program.

"Young Frankenstein" at the Albuquerque Little Theatre

Thurs. 10/24 10a:   Mel Brooks followed up his Broadway smash, "The Producers," with another musical adaptation of one of his hit films.  "Young Frankenstein," closely based on the 1974 comedy, is on stage through November 3 at the Albuquerque Little Theatre.  Spencer Beckwith is joined by the show's director, the Little Theater's Executive Director, Henry Avery.

The Blackout Theatre Company opens Quarantine ABQ, a zombie-themed, interactive haunted house experience Thursday, October 24th. The show runs through Halloween.

"Peace Talks Radio" Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

Thurs. 9/12 10a:  Spencer Beckwith talks with Paul Ingles, the producer and host of "Peace Talks," the series about peacemaking and nonviolent conflict resolution.  The program, which is broadcast on KUNM the last Friday of each month at 8am, marks its 10th anniversary with two benefit concerts, September 13 at Santa Fe's James A. Little Theatre and September 14 at the Outpost Performance Space in Albuquerque.

A "New Comedy" by Mark Twain at the Adobe Theater

Wed. 9/11 10a:  Written in 1898, Mark Twain's play "Is He Dead?" was never produced in the author's lifetime.  It was rediscovered in 2003, and adapted by playwright David Ives for a production in New York.  The comedy makes its New Mexico debut at Albuquerque's Adobe Theater, from September 13 through October 6.  Spencer Beckwith is joined by the director of "Is He Dead?," Brian Hansen.

The New Mexico Philharmonic's Fundraising Concert at the KiMo

Fri. 9/6 10a:  A benefit concert on September 7 at the KiMo Theatre in Albuquerque opens the third season of the New Mexico Philharmonic.  Joining the orchestra will be violinist Rachel Barton Pine and young musicians from the Albuquerque community.  The concert raises funds for the Philharmonic's Young Musician Initiative.  Spencer Beckwith talks with the Executive Director of the New Mexico Philharmonic, Marian Tanau.

The Music Guild of New Mexico Hosts a Benefit Concert

Thurs. 9/5 10a:  Former President of the Music Guild of New Mexico, Jackie McGehee, joins Spencer Beckwith to talk about a benefit concert on September 12 at Sandia Prep in Albuquerque.  The concert supports a competition for young pianists and string players that Jackie McGehee founded in 1994, the Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Competition.  Performing on September 12 will be Santa Fe pianist Doug Montgomery and two previous winners of the competition, Maria Vigil and Gabriel Landstedt.

"The St. John's Bach Project"
