Spencer Beckwith covers the performing arts in Northern and Central New Mexico.  From 2004 through March of 2014, he hosted and produced KUNM's "Performance New Mexico," a weekday morning program that included announcements from the KUNM Arts Calendar, as well as interviews with musicians, writers and performers. Since April of 2014, Spencer has contributed semimonthly segments on the performing arts to KUNM's weekend news shows.

The Albuquerque Civic Chorus: A Holiday Concert

Wed. 11/27 10a:  The 80 members of the all-volunteer Albuquerque Civic Chorus celebrate Benjamin Britten's centennial with performances of the composer's "Ceremony of Carols" on November 30 and December 1 at Albuquerque's South Broadway Cultural Center.  Also on the program is Camille Saint-Saëns' "Christmas Oratorio."  Spencer Beckwith is joined by the Director of the Albuquerque Civic Chorus, Dr. Gary Wayne Pyland.

The Santa Fe Community Orchestra's Winter Concert

Fri. 11/22 10a:  Spencer Beckwith is joined by Music Director Oliver Prezant for a look at the Santa Fe Community Orchestra's concert on November 24 in the St. Francis Auditorium.  The volunteer musicians will be joined by special guests, young string players from Gonzales Community School and professional cellist Dana Winograd, for music by Piazzolla, Popper and Tchaikovsky.  Also featured on the program is a
prize-winning new work by New Mexico composer Michael Bowen.

A Musical Celebration of the Anniversary of the Mexican Revolution

Fri. 11/15 10a:  The University of New Mexico Symphony Orchestra celebrates the 103rd anniversary of the Mexican Revolution with a performance of “La Coronela,” by 20th Century Mexican composer, Silvestre Revueltas.  The multimedia concerts, on November 19 and 20 at Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque, include projected images by Mexican visual artist José Guadalupe Posada.  Spencer Beckwith is joined by the conductor of the concerts, Director of Orchestral Activities at UNM, Dr. Jorge Pérez-Gómez.

Fri. 11/8 10a:  Eight local playwrights, several of them cancer survivors, have contributed new short works to the program, "Celebrating Survival," November 8, 9 and 10 at the Santa Fe Playhouse.  The evening of staged readings is a benefit for the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico.  Spencer Beckwith is joined by the organizer of the event, Santa Fe writer Michael Burgan.

The UNM Department of Theatre Presents "Spring Awakening"

Wed. 11/6 10a:  Composer Duncan Sheik and librettist Steven Sater adapted their 2006 Broadway hit, "Spring Awakening," from Frank Wedekind's controversial 1906 drama about teenagers discovering their sexuality.  The rock musical is on stage November 1-17 in Rodey Theatre on the University of New Mexico's Albuquerque campus.  Spencer Beckwith speaks with the director of "Spring Awakening," UNM faculty member Kathleen Clawson.

"The Majesty of Music & Mathematics"

Wed. 10/25 10a:  The Santa Fe Symphony continues its collaboration with the Santa Fe Institute for a multimedia concert on November 2 at the Lensic Center.  Using scientific demonstrations as well as the music of Bach, Brahms, Richard Strauss, John Williams and John Adams, the program looks at the close relationship between music and mathematics.   Spencer Beckwith is joined by mathematician Cris Moore of the Santa Fe Institute for a preview of the program.

"Young Frankenstein" at the Albuquerque Little Theatre

Thurs. 10/24 10a:   Mel Brooks followed up his Broadway smash, "The Producers," with another musical adaptation of one of his hit films.  "Young Frankenstein," closely based on the 1974 comedy, is on stage through November 3 at the Albuquerque Little Theatre.  Spencer Beckwith is joined by the show's director, the Little Theater's Executive Director, Henry Avery.

A "New Comedy" by Mark Twain at the Adobe Theater

Wed. 9/11 10a:  Written in 1898, Mark Twain's play "Is He Dead?" was never produced in the author's lifetime.  It was rediscovered in 2003, and adapted by playwright David Ives for a production in New York.  The comedy makes its New Mexico debut at Albuquerque's Adobe Theater, from September 13 through October 6.  Spencer Beckwith is joined by the director of "Is He Dead?," Brian Hansen.

The New Mexico Philharmonic's Fundraising Concert at the KiMo

Fri. 9/6 10a:  A benefit concert on September 7 at the KiMo Theatre in Albuquerque opens the third season of the New Mexico Philharmonic.  Joining the orchestra will be violinist Rachel Barton Pine and young musicians from the Albuquerque community.  The concert raises funds for the Philharmonic's Young Musician Initiative.  Spencer Beckwith talks with the Executive Director of the New Mexico Philharmonic, Marian Tanau.
