Raíces

Raices is a KUNM Volunteer Collective dedicated to bring listeners the rich and diverse Latin American,Chicano and Hispano musical roots and alternative culture, rhythms, instruments and singers or musicalgroups. From our particular life experience we all have an individual passion and love to share suchsongs and musical pieces you won’t hear anywhere else.

Raices Shows air Mondays 7:30 to 10 pm, Saturdays 2 to 5 pm. “Salsa Sabrosa” is also brought to you byRaices Collective Fridays 7 to 10 pm; and “Corazon Tanguero” every other Monday 9:30 to 10 pm.

“Espejos de Aztlán”, is a weekly half hour interview segment, every Monday 7 – 7:30 pm dedicated to bring you local news and cultural/political discussions affecting our Latino/Chicano/Hispano New Mexican communities from a social justice perspective.

Panameño pianist Danilo Pérez

 Mon. Oct 8, 7:30p: Raíces features Panamanian pianist and composer, Danilo Pérez. His distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz, covering both the folkloric and world music of the Americas, has attracted critical acclaim and loyal audiences.  As a member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet since early 2000,  he won a Grammy. Pérez and his TRIO will perform later this week at the Outpost in Albuquerque.

Sat. 9/29, 2p: It’s CUCARACHA TIME!  this Saturday afternoon on Raíces  when we will be joined live by Los Angeles-based cartoonist, humorist and social critic Lalo Alcaraz (ajua) for a sampling of his life and times. Creator of the nationally-syndicated comic strip La Cucaracha and of “self-deportationist” character Daniel D. Portado, Alcaraz is “Jefe in Chief” of the “Ñews y Satire” website pocho.com. He also hosts the weekly Pocho Hour of Power on KPFK-FM in LA, and is widely rumored to be a close confidant of Mexican Mitt Romneez.

Beyond the south... "ENCUENTRO"!

Mon. Oct 1, 8pm:  ENCUENTRO, South American music band -led by  vocalist JACKIE ZAMORA and charango player KILKO PAZ-, will bring live on RAÍCES their unique musical blend of flavors from Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Venezuela and Chile.

They will present their musical voyage as a "Peña" at the Outpost Performance Space, Saturday October 6th, 7:30pm.

TEATRO CHICANA

Sat 9/15 2.30p: Five women of TEATRO CHICANA will perform one of their scripts of "Teatro Chicana: the Collective memoirs",  and play live music with us.

They began in San Diego State University as a group of Chicana women participating in a political theatre group during the seventies. Their plays addressed social, gender, and political issues of the working class and the Chicano Movement. We´ll talk with them about the power of theater to provoke social and personal change.

The Roots of the Narcocorrido
