Raíces

Sat. 9/29, 2p: It’s CUCARACHA TIME!  this Saturday afternoon on Raíces  when we will be joined live by Los Angeles-based cartoonist, humorist and social critic Lalo Alcaraz (ajua) for a sampling of his life and times. Creator of the nationally-syndicated comic strip La Cucaracha and of “self-deportationist” character Daniel D. Portado, Alcaraz is “Jefe in Chief” of the “Ñews y Satire” website pocho.com. He also hosts the weekly Pocho Hour of Power on KPFK-FM in LA, and is widely rumored to be a close confidant of Mexican Mitt Romneez.

Mon. Oct 1, 8pm:  ENCUENTRO, South American music band -led by  vocalist JACKIE ZAMORA and charango player KILKO PAZ-, will bring live on RAÍCES their unique musical blend of flavors from Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Venezuela and Chile.

They will present their musical voyage as a "Peña" at the Outpost Performance Space, Saturday October 6th, 7:30pm. 

Mon. Sept/24 7:30p: Latin American songs, from boleros to protest songs saying NO! to a lost love or  unreliable politicians. Be ready to listen sweet, romantic, angry, and funny NOs.

Sat 9/15 2.30p: Five women of TEATRO CHICANA will perform one of their scripts of "Teatro Chicana: the Collective memoirs",  and play live music with us.

They began in San Diego State University as a group of Chicana women participating in a political theatre group during the seventies. Their plays addressed social, gender, and political issues of the working class and the Chicano Movement. We´ll talk with them about the power of theater to provoke social and personal change.

Mon. 9/10 7.30-10.00 pm: "Las No Tan Conocidas".  Latin American women singers from throughout the Americas that you might not know... like Adriana, Ana, Arahi, Adella, Badi, Barbara, Bebe and more! Enjoy with us this musical diversity sang by female voices. Host: Cristina Baccin

We celebrate Labor Day with Latin American songs that pay tribute to the life of workers. Happy Labor Day!

Sat. 8/11, 2p:  The duo, vocalist Debo Orlofsky and guitarist Tony Cesarano, will play live Brazilian music! From Jobim to Joyce, Jazz Brasileiro is synonymous with Brazilian Jazz, playing both classic bossa nova and a wide range of contemporary Brazilian music.

Mon. Aug 6, 7.30p:  Yesterday, Chavela Vargas, a legendary singer in Mexico, died at age 93.This evening,  we´ll play Chavela Vargas music to say good-bye to her. Host: Cristina Baccin

Fri. 8/3 7p:  Join the crew of Salsa Sabrosa for an evening with Cafe Mocha, one of Albuquerque's hottest salsa bands.

Cafe Mocha performs at the Albuquerque Museum Ampitheater as part of the New Mexico Jazz Workshop "Salsa Under the Stars" series.

Sat. 8/4 2p:  Joanne Shenandoah, one of the most important voices for the Oneida people and the Native American country, visits Albuquerque this weekend for her concert at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. She´ll talk with host Cristina Baccin about her tribute to the life of cycles of women, our balance with mother earth, and her new album "Lifegivers".

Sat 7/28 2.30pm_ Jimmy Santiago Baca, New Mexican author of "A place to stand", will talk with host Henry Gonzales about a documentary based on his authorized memoir, which has been called “elegant and gripping” (The Los Angeles Times).

"A place to stand" follows Baca´s transformation from nearly illiterate convict to award-winning poet .

Mon. 6/18 7.30 p:   The berimbau -a single-stringed musical bow- made his trip from Angola to Brazil with African slaves. Today, berimbau is an integral part of  capoeira: an art, a game, a dance, a sport? We´ll interview  Julio Cesar Souza (Mestre Virgulino) born and trained in capoeira in Brazil.

Sat. 4/21 2p: Gustavo Arellano, the writer of "Ask a Mexican", will talk with us about his new book... and we'll have fun with food songs! Hosted by Cristina Baccin. 

Sat. 4/21 2p: Based in Albuquerque's South Valley Los Jaraneros del Valle play "Son Jarocho" which is Mexican folk music originated centuries ago in the Gulf coastal region of southern Veracruz. This music is the complex heritage of a transcontinental cultural journey, linking African influences with European and Native American styles, instrumentation and outlook.  Hosted by Cristina Baccin. 

Sat. 3/3 2p:  Argentinian Volontè will share with us her current repertoire of original compositions. Songlines Magazine (UK) describes her as "a singer who can switch between jazz and blues-influenced vocals, intimate Argentinian-style folk singing and classic big tango diva numbers". 

Sat. 01/28  3p:  Narcocorridos are Mexican songs that narrate the story of a drug trafficking event or a drug trafficker,mostly in a rhythmic “Norteňo” style or with “Banda”. They have become part of the popular musical culture around the U.S./Mexican Border during the last 40 years. Currently banned in Mexican commercial media, they have been highly commercialized and performing groups quite busy.

Sat. 12/17 3p: Albuquerque's Mezcla Latina performs a diverse repertoire of Latino musical pieces, from dancing genres like Cumbias, Boleros and Cha-Cha-Cha/Salsa rhythms, to Norteno accordion and Mexican classics of famous composers. 

Mon. 10/31 7p:  Teatro Paraguas and KUNM’s Raices Collective present the radio drama  "El Encanto, Tendajón Mixto".

Saturday 10/29 2p: Virtuoso on the arpa jarocho, Otilio Ruiz will share with us his new CD. And more Latin American music with harp!
