Raíces

Raices is a KUNM Volunteer Collective dedicated to bring listeners the rich and diverse Latin American,Chicano and Hispano musical roots and alternative culture, rhythms, instruments and singers or musicalgroups. From our particular life experience we all have an individual passion and love to share suchsongs and musical pieces you won’t hear anywhere else.

Raices Shows air Mondays 7:30 to 10 pm, Saturdays 2 to 5 pm. “Salsa Sabrosa” is also brought to you byRaices Collective Fridays 7 to 10 pm; and “Corazon Tanguero” every other Monday 9:30 to 10 pm.

“Espejos de Aztlán”, is a weekly half hour interview segment, every Monday 7 – 7:30 pm dedicated to bring you local news and cultural/political discussions affecting our Latino/Chicano/Hispano New Mexican communities from a social justice perspective.

Sat. 15 Feb. 2:30p: CARLOS NÚÑEZ, the magician of the gaita, Galician bagpipe, speaks with us about the magic of Galician celtic music, from the Northwestern region of Spain, and its relationship to the other celtic music traditions from around the world, including Latin America.  Our conversation is filled with sparks of light, mystery and revelation.

Sat. 18 Jan. 2p: We´ll commemorate Martin Luther King birthday featuring poesia negra by Luis Palés Matos (Puerto Rico),  Nicolás Guillén (Cuba), and music that celebrates Afro roots in Latin America.

Sat. 4 Jan. 2p:   DE´ANZA PAREDES, a young Santafesina singer emerging as part of a new  generation of young Latino artists in the United States, will perform live with her vihuela during RAÍCES show. We´ll converse about how her bicultural home enriches her music. Ready to release her freshman album "Despertar", she launches her career as a Chicana artist.

Afterwards, at 3pm, we´ll begin to celebrate the Feast of Epiphany, the "Three  Kings Day", "Día de los Reyes Magos" or "La Befana" with songs, letters, and poems written and read by children. Be ready for surprises!

They documented the way that dead or almas are feted in Teotitlán del Valle (Oaxaca, México). We´ll share with you the stories and the soundtrack.

Mon. 30 Sept. 7:30p: The world of flamenco’s "Golden Age” comes to life on RAÍCES  with artists from Spain, France, Cuba, Mexico, and the US directed by Jesús Muñoz presenting the show "1929". They´ll revive an era through a fresh combination of youth, creativity and modern-day groove.

Sat. Sept. 21, 2:30 p: We will be joined by Bay Area multi-percussionist John Santos for a conversation about his life and times, with of course a generous sampling of his music! Santos is a major exponent of Afro-Latin music through innovative use of traditional forms and instruments with contemporary music.

Monday, 16 Sept. 8:00 pm: Born in the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sofia Rei is immersed in a profound musical journey. With the breath that music allows when the soul can live across all borders, sin fronteras, she creates deep lyrics, and unique sounds. Her music travels across the jazz and South American landscapes opening the genre of Latino music in the US and throughout the world.
Sofia Rei will be performing at Globalquerque, on Saturday September 21st, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Sat. 11 May, 4 pm: Small and powerful, pequeña y poderosa, Lily Yeh uses colors to light the paths of the darkness that hidden pains, of trauma and lost freedoms. She visited our state as guest of  the New Mexico Community Foundation for the project LA CULTURA CURA/The Culture cures.  And she worked with young people at the La Plazita Institute, in the heart of the South Valley of Albuquerque.  Two days  happily ended in a big cloth with an enormous  flowery tree that grows in the middle of the Rio Grande. The tree of life? The River of life? Better!

Sat. 11 May 2p: Flamenco’s dance and music in an interview with the Internationally renowned Jesús Muñoz . He is recognized for having an unique and original rhythm that represents his American roots with traditional Spanish influence.  Muñoz will introduce his new Flamenco show "RED NOTE" that will be performed at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on May 17-18.  Be prepared to take a journey to southern Spain where soul meets dance.

They bring big border attitude, crazy Latin ritmos, their latest CD "Revolutionize", and a message of peace and community to RAICES. Mon. 2/18 7:30p: Today, we’ll be joined by Quetzal Flores, co-leader of LA-based Quetzal. Well known and loved in New Mexico, Quetzal just won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Alternative, Urban, or Rock Album, for Imaginaries, released on Smithsonian Folkways (www.folkways.si.edu). We’ll be celebrating with Quetzal and listening to some of their music. Then later on in the program, we will be joined by José Miguel Acosta, back in New Mexico with a lot of Reggae en Español that he will  share with us.

The Figueroa Project - Fiesta Latina! A Feast of Hispanic Chamber Music
