Raíces

Raices is a KUNM Volunteer Collective dedicated to bring listeners the rich and diverse Latin American,Chicano and Hispano musical roots and alternative culture, rhythms, instruments and singers or musicalgroups. From our particular life experience we all have an individual passion and love to share suchsongs and musical pieces you won’t hear anywhere else.

Raices Shows air Mondays 7:30 to 10 pm, Saturdays 2 to 5 pm. “Salsa Sabrosa” is also brought to you byRaices Collective Fridays 7 to 10 pm; and “Corazon Tanguero” every other Monday 9:30 to 10 pm.

“Espejos de Aztlán”, is a weekly half hour interview segment, every Monday 7 – 7:30 pm dedicated to bring you local news and cultural/political discussions affecting our Latino/Chicano/Hispano New Mexican communities from a social justice perspective.

Sat. 20 July 2pm: Eminent Cuban guitarist and composer Héctor García will share with RAÍCES  the noble sound of his guitar while introducing us to his repertoire for a PIMENTEL Concert (National Hispanic Cultural Center, August 3rd, 7:30pm).

Sat. 11 May, 4 pm: Small and powerful, pequeña y poderosa, Lily Yeh uses colors to light the paths of the darkness that hidden pains, of trauma and lost freedoms. She visited our state as guest of  the New Mexico Community Foundation for the project LA CULTURA CURA/The Culture cures.  And she worked with young people at the La Plazita Institute, in the heart of the South Valley of Albuquerque.  Two days  happily ended in a big cloth with an enormous  flowery tree that grows in the middle of the Rio Grande. The tree of life? The River of life? Better!

Sat. 11 May 2p: Flamenco’s dance and music in an interview with the Internationally renowned Jesús Muñoz . He is recognized for having an unique and original rhythm that represents his American roots with traditional Spanish influence.  Muñoz will introduce his new Flamenco show "RED NOTE" that will be performed at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on May 17-18.  Be prepared to take a journey to southern Spain where soul meets dance.

They bring big border attitude, crazy Latin ritmos, their latest CD "Revolutionize", and a message of peace and community to RAICES. Well known and loved in New Mexico, Quetzal just won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Alternative, Urban, or Rock Album, for Imaginaries, released on Smithsonian Folkways (www.folkways.si.edu). We’ll be celebrating with Quetzal and listening to some of their music.
