Raíces

Raices is a KUNM Volunteer Collective dedicated to bring listeners the rich and diverse Latin American,Chicano and Hispano musical roots and alternative culture, rhythms, instruments and singers or musicalgroups. From our particular life experience we all have an individual passion and love to share suchsongs and musical pieces you won’t hear anywhere else.

Raices Shows air Mondays 7:30 to 10 pm, Saturdays 2 to 5 pm. “Salsa Sabrosa” is also brought to you byRaices Collective Fridays 7 to 10 pm; and “Corazon Tanguero” every other Monday 9:30 to 10 pm.

“Espejos de Aztlán”, is a weekly half hour interview segment, every Monday 7 – 7:30 pm dedicated to bring you local news and cultural/political discussions affecting our Latino/Chicano/Hispano New Mexican communities from a social justice perspective.

In her extraordinary memoir,  she vividly brings to life her childhood,  spent torn between two parents and two countries. Reyna Grande is an important public voice for Mexican-Americans and immigrants of every origin. On Saturday March 30th at 2pm, she will read at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Sat. 3/ 23  2p: My first assignment with Raices took me to a B-Side Players show that was "gateway",  in Spanish. Karlos Paez and the Players live south of no north. They bring big border attitude, crazy Latin ritmos, their latest CD "Revolutionize", and a message of peace and community to RAICES. Minutes before a performance, Karlos talks with us in a conversation recorded out behind Low Spirits. We have all the high-lights... and all the details of the B-Side Players´return for a live performance April 6 at 20th annual Cesar Chavez celebration at the NHCC. RAICES will be there too!

Sat. 3/9th  2:00 p: "La Catrina Quartet”will perform live to celebrate with RAÍCES their 2012 Latin Grammy  for their work on the album “Brasileiro, works of Mignone” by Cuarto Latinoamericano. The award-winning CD, on the Sono Lumnius label, won for Best Classical Recording, with the ensemble collaborating on Francisco Mignone’s “Seresta for double quartet.” They were hailed by Yo-Yo Ma as wonderful ambassadors of music.

Well known and loved in New Mexico, Quetzal just won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Alternative, Urban, or Rock Album, for Imaginaries, released on Smithsonian Folkways (www.folkways.si.edu). We’ll be celebrating with Quetzal and listening to some of their music. Then later on in the program, we will be joined by José Miguel Acosta, back in New Mexico with a lot of Reggae en Español that he will  share with us.

His distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz, covering both the folkloric and world music of the Americas, has attracted critical acclaim and loyal audiences.  As a member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet since early 2000,  he won a Grammy. Pérez and his TRIO will perform later this week at the Outpost in Albuquerque.

Creator of the nationally-syndicated comic strip La Cucaracha and of “self-deportationist” character Daniel D. Portado, Alcaraz is “Jefe in Chief” of the “Ñews y Satire” website pocho.com. He also hosts the weekly Pocho Hour of Power on KPFK-FM in LA, and is widely rumored to be a close confidant of Mexican Mitt Romneez.
