Austin Piazzolla Quintet specializes in the music of the late Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla. APQ continues in the Nuevo Tango tradition with unique arrangements of Piazzolla's classic compositions, breathtaking original compositions, and talented improvisation. The quintet features some of the finest talent on the Austin music scene today, with experienced musicians coming from diverse backgrounds and educated at some of the world's finest music schools.

The ensemble consists of James Anderson (violin), Jonathan Geer (keyboard), Mike Maddux (accordion), Tony Rogers (cello) and Pat Harris (bass).
During his live performance for RAÍCES (May 3rd), Cipriano Vigil, New Mexican musicologist and musician shares his songs, and his new book, “New Mexican Folk Music/Cancionero del Folklor Nuevomexicano” (UNM Press, 2014).
The Black Lillies, led by multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter Cruz Contreras, are currently on tour. They stopped by KUNM to perform live on Afternoon Freeform (April 23) with Carol Boss. The band’s blend of country, alt-rock, neo-folk and Appalachian soul has earned them critical acclaim nationwide and their most recent album, Runaway Freeway Blues, was included on numerous Best Albums of the Year (2013) lists.

Wed. 2/6 1:30p: The American/Brazilian group Nation Beat joins Carol Boss in the studio for live music. This world beat fusion project has pioneered a synthesis of music from northeastern Brazil and the deep American South. They play a 21st century mashup inspired by Brazilian maracatu drumming, New Orleans second line rhythms, funk and country-blues.
Wed 10/31 1:30p: Four KUNM Freeform DJs join Carol Boss to spin some of their favorite creepy, ghoulish, wacky Halloween tunes. Travis Parkin, Mello, Mary B, Brandon "Dead" Kennedy and Carol Boss will be mixing their spook-tacular brews just for you.
Thursday Afternoon Freeform host Scott Denton speaks with Nels Cline, veteran solo/collaborative musician, composer, and bandleader in free jazz, experimental and rock genres, as well as lead guitarist for Wilco (appearing at the Santa Fe Opera September 18th).

Mon. 7/25 at (roughly) 140pm: Pistolera/Moona Luna will drop by the KUNM studios for a short performance and interview with DJ Peggy Hessing. Pistolera is a critically acclaimed New York band whose accordion-driven dance music has fans around the world dancing cumbias to the group's socially conscious songs?en espa?ol?about immigrants' rights, war, racism, feminism, and life on the border. Their alter ego Moona Luna is a bilingual family band.

Wed. 3/23 at 2pm: A singer, songwriter, guitarist and kantele player (Finnish folk harp), Diane Jarvi is a versatile performer of folk and world music. Diane will be joined by Dan Newton (aka Daddy Squeeze) on accordion.
In addition to her own compositions, Jarvi is known for her intimate and authentic interpretations of tangos, waltzes, gypsy music, ballads, jazz standards and cabaret songs from around the world. On Wild Gardens, her latest CD, Jarvi travels through the gardens of France, Finland, Sweden, Chile, the British Isles and Texas.
Thurs. 1/27: This week, host Travis Parkin's eclectic themed sets include "We Got the Boogie" and "State of the Union." Plus, a set of songs written by Jerome Kern in honor of (what would have been) his 126th birthday.
