UNM’s Kiva Club, a Native American issues student club, and a Native American Studies class are holding a demonstration Thursday to show solidarity with tribes from across the country that are protesting the construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline in North Dakota.

UNM student Hope Alvarado is going to hand out fliers during the rally. She said she’s worried about pollution of water resources.

“This isn’t just a Native or Indigenous problem, it’s a human problem,” she said. “It’s something we all need to get involved with because we all drink water.”

Alvarado said she hopes the rally will also raise awareness about other pipelines that affect Native American communities.

Protesters have been demonstrating in North Dakota for months. This weekend, they clashed with the pipeline company’s private security guards.
