Every week nearly 40,000 New Mexicans seek food assistance, according to the New Mexico Association of Food Banks. Although the exact number of college students who are hungry isn't clear, students may need food assistance as well.
A new mobile food program will kickoff this week at UNM. The Lobo Food Pantry will serve UNM students who need help buying groceries. UNM officials along with the Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico have partnered up in the pilot program.
Lisa Lindquist is with the UNM Division of Student Affairs. "Literally a big ol' truck pulls up," she explained. "Your group of volunteers goes in and unloads the truck and they set up their tables kind of like a grocery store."
The Lobo Food Pantry will set up at University Stadium in Albuquerque every third Thursday through July. Students must leave their name and address to receive food, but there is no other requirement.
