State Land Lease Extended For NM Shooting Range

State Land Commissioner Ray Powell says his office will continue to lease 120 acres of public land in south Albuquerque for a shooting range operated by a local gun club.

A lease with Zia Rifle and Pistol Club has been extended for five years, and the Land Office will receive $11,000 a year.

The shooting range is near Kirtland Air Force Base and an Albuquerque police firing range.

Powell said Wednesday the land is remote and "provides a safe environment for community members to practice their marksmanship."

Public schools, universities and state hospitals benefit from revenues from state trust land leases, including for grazing and oil and gas production.

Powell said the University of New Mexico will receive the money from the shooting range lease.
