Skandera's Confirmation Hearing Delayed

Governor Susana Martinez's administration responded sharply to the delay of Education Secretary Designate Hanna Skandera's senate confirmation hearing, calling the move "unprofessional".

The Albuquerque Journal reports hearings were not resumed on Monday as planned.  The criticism focused on Senate Rules Committee Chairwoman Linda Lopez, a Democrat from Albuquerque, with accusations that her decision was politically motivated.

Lopez responded a large number of people had come to Santa Fe to testify during the public comment period and that the committee would still need a chance to question Skandera.

Skandera has served in the position for two years since she was nominated by Governor Martinez in 2011.  Her confirmation could be held up if it is tabled by the Senate committee.  She could be prevented from formally taking the position if the full Senate fails to confirm her.
