Senate OKs Webcasting Of Committee Hearings

The Senate is offering New Mexicans expanded online access to its proceedings through webcasts of committee hearings.

Senators approved a rules change on Tuesday to permit people from around the state to watch or listen to committee meetings through webcasts available from a link on the Legislature's web site.

Legislative webcasting has happened incrementally.

The Senate began streaming audio and video of its floor sessions in 2009. That same year the House started audio webcasting floor sessions and added video in 2010.

Audio webcasts of House committees began in 2010, and video was launched last year.

Gov. Susana Martinez's office has webcast House and Senate committees since the Republican governor took office in 2011. The video is archived on the governor's web site.
