Santa Fe Railway Ceases Rides To Lamy

There will be no tourist trains running this summer between Santa Fe and the community of Lamy.

The Santa Fe Southern Railway has laid off all of its workers and the board chairman says he doesn't expect to operate at all this year.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that company owner Karl Ziebarth informed the Lamy Community Association of the decision during a meeting Wednesday.

He says there's no money in the passenger business and pointed to the past few years of tough economic times.

Ziebarth says the company has been able to keep the railroad alive for the past 20 years and is still working to find funding. However, he made the association no promises.

The excursion train used to run from Memorial Day to mid-October.
