The Rose Tattoo by Tennessee Williams - Part 2
Sun. 1/9: 2011 is the centennial of one of American's greatest playwrights, Tennessee Williams who was born in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1911. To pay honor to him, Radio Theatre starts out the year with a play he called his "love play to the world."
The Rose Tattoo is a delightful comic romance, in which two unlikely lovers meet along the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Mercedes Ruehl stars as Serafina delle Rose, a poor Sicilian widow living with her only daughter, Rosa. Anthony LaPaglia stars as her ardent suitor, Alvarro Mangiacavallo. Our broadcasts this week and next feature a piece on the Italians of the Gulf Coast with Anthony Margavio, author of Bread And Respect: The Italians of Louisiana; and an interview with Tennessee Williams biographer Kenneth Holditch, who takes us on a guided tour of Williams' life during the time of The Rose Tattoo. A production of LA Theatre Works.
