The act of being recognized by the federal government ultimately means acknowledgement as a sovereign nation. This includes the right to govern by overseeing economic development, education, housing, health issues, and control over your land base. It also means access to federal dollars. Tribes that are out of the federal recognition loop say the current process of seeking recognition is out dated.
