Responding To Islamophobia In New Mexico

Dec 8, 2015

KUNM Call In Show 12/10 8a: In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, there's been an uptick in anti-Muslim rhetoric in response to the shootings.

This has been especially evident in the 2016 Presidential campaigns as one of the top Republican candidates, Donald Trump, has called for Muslims to be barred from entering the U.S. as tourists and immigrants. President Obama in his recent address to the nation called for Muslim communities in the U.S. and around the world to confront extremist ideology within Muslim communities. Locally, Governor Susana Martinez has said she doesn't want Syrian refugees to be resettled here.

How is a widespread misunderstanding of Islam affecting the Muslim community here in New Mexico? And is anti-Muslim sentiment as strong as it was after the 9/11 attacks? Should the conversation be shifted?

We'll talk about responding to Islamophobia in New Mexico and we'd like to hear from you! Email callinshow@kunm.org, post your comments on our Facebook page, tweet @KUNMNews or call in live during the show.
