Police Oversight Board Critical Of APD Reform Process

Rita Daniels

Members of the board tasked with overseeing policy changes for the Albuquerque Police Department are concerned that public trust in the department is eroding.

The Police Oversight Board was created as part of the settlement agreement between the City of Albuquerque and the Department of Justice after an investigation found that APD officers engaged in a pattern of unconstitutional policing.

But board member David Ring says over the past six months APD has stonewalled them and submitted their own policy changes for review without any input from the board or the public.

“The Albuquerque Police Department is revising it’s Standard Operating Procedures,” Ring said, “and they’re not including us in any of that. They just ignore that we even exist.”

The board’s chair delivered a letter to top APD officials and the mayor on Tuesday imploring them to rethink their process.

A spokesperson for APD told KRQE-TV that policy changes will still have to be approved by a federal judge and that there are many ways for the public to make suggestions.
