Firefighters believe a historic mining town in southern New Mexico is relatively safe from a raging 47-square-mile blaze in the Gila National Forest.
Incident management team supervisor Keith Halloran told the Silver City Daily Press (http://bit.ly/13V1g9b ) on Wednesday that even if embers or other fire enter the fuel break around Kingston, there should be no impact to the village.
The Silver Fire is expected to burn more acreage throughout the week spilling smoke into nearby towns and creating more headaches for firefighters.
Crews worked to build protection the Kingston and Royal John Mine areas as soon as the lightning-caused fire started June 7. More than 500 firefighters are battling the blaze.
Officials told the Daily Press that an evacuation order remained in effect for Kingston.
