New Mexico Dem Leader Unsure On GOP Driver's License Fix
-Russell Contreras, Associated Press

New Mexico House Minority Leader Brian Egolf says he's not ready to support a GOP-sponsored proposal creating a "two-tier" driver's license system modeled after Utah.

The Santa Fe Democrat said this week he's awaiting details on a plan to grant driving privilege cards for immigrants — even those suspected of living in the country illegally.

Republican Rep. Paul Pacheco plans to sponsor a bill to end a stalemate between the GOP-controlled House and the Democratic-led Senate.

Egolf says for now he supports the Senate proposal that lets immigrants keep licenses regardless of status.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently denied New Mexico an extension on complying with tougher federal requirements that require proof of legal residency for state driver's licenses and IDs to be valid for some federal purposes.

F-16 Fighter Jet Crashes On Training Mission; Pilot Safe – The Associated Press

Authorities say an F-16 fighter jet from an Air Force base in Arizona crashed while on a training mission in New Mexico, but the pilot safely ejected.

The Fighting Falcon went down about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday near Salinas Peak, some 45 miles northwest of Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. Officials from Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona, say emergency response teams found the pilot in good condition.

An Air Force team will investigate the cause of the crash. Officials say the pilot is from the New Mexico base and the F-16 was part of the 54th Fighter Group at the Arizona base.

Luke is making room for F-35 jets and shifting many F-16s to Holloman for training missions.

The name of the pilot wasn't immediately released.

County Officials Halt Bid To Incorporate Santa Teresa – The Associated Press

Officials in Dona Ana County have halted a bid to incorporate the border town of Santa Teresa.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that the opponents of the incorporation effort included the nearby city of Sunland Park.

Supporters of the incorporation effort argued they had to show only evidence that Sunland Park couldn't adequately provide services to Santa Teresa if Santa Teresa was folded into Sunland Park.

But Sunland Park officials contended that Santa Teresa residents had to meet other requirements, meaning residents would first have to petition Sunland Park for an annexation into that city and be denied or seek a letter of support from Sunland Park showing that the city was in favor of the incorporation.
