Navajos Want To Renegotiate Gaming Compact With State

Officials with the Navajo Nation say they want to renegotiate the renewal of the tribe's gaming compact with the state of New Mexico before the end of the month.

The Gallup Independent reports that the tribe's negotiating team has been meeting with Gov. Susana Martinez's office.

Karis Begaye of the Navajo Nation Department of Justice updated tribal officials this week on the negotiations.

The Legislature would have to approve any agreement. It would then be sent to the U.S. Department of Interior to ensure its provisions meet federal laws.

The Navajo Nation signed on to the gaming compact in 2003. It expires in 2015.

The tribe opened its first casino near Gallup, N.M., in 2008. It has since opened two more in far northwestern New Mexico.
