Tucked away in a remote border region, the Mexican city of Piedras Negras seems a rarity these days. 

It has steered clear of drug-war related violence that plagues other border cities in the region like Nuevo Laredo. And that’s just how the business community likes it here. In part four of the Fronteras Changing America Desk series on maquiladoras, Hernan Rozemberg reports foreign-owned manufacturing plants in Piedras Negras are surviving competition from Asia and the U.S. recession; they’re even adding jobs.
