The Gun Control Debate
Fri. 1/25 11a: The gun control debate is heating up again. Last week, President Obama unveiled a set of gun control reform proposals for the US Congress and 23 executive actions on the issue.
How does Native America fit into the gun control conversation? The second amendment was passed in 1791 when Native Americans were not American citizens some were at war with the U.S. government. The historical memory of Native people is long and for a group of colonized people, voluntarily giving up rights to own guns defies logic. Yet gun violence affects Native America with elevated murder and suicide rates.
