Bernalillo To Again Consider Inmate Transfers

Bernalillo County commissioners on Tuesday will again consider a proposal to ship out hundreds of inmates to relieve crowding in the county jail in Albuquerque.

The commissioners deadlocked last month on county officials' recommendation to send up to 300 inmates to jails in Cibola and Sandoval counties, to the Torrance County Detention Facility operated by Correction Corp. of America in Estancia and possibly a facility in Littlefield, Texas.

The issue returns to the commission's agenda on Tuesday, with a staff report warning that a court could order the county to transfer more than 700 inmates if the county doesn't approve a smaller transfer.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that renewed consideration of the idea comes as commissioners participate in confidential settlement talks in a long-running federal lawsuit over jail conditions.
