Albuquerque Police 'Use of Force' Investigation Expands

Another member of the Albuquerque Police Department is under investigation as a result of two incidents in May, when APD officers used Tasers.

The Albuquerque Journal reports APD Internal Affairs is examining Commander Mike Geier's actions when he learned of the tasing incidents.

Internal Affairs is investigating whether the use of force violated department policy. It is also focusing on whether other APD personnel — including Geier — violated department policies either by failing to intervene when the officers were using force or by investigating reports about the force incorrectly.

One of the officers, Connor Rice, is the subject of a criminal investigation after a video from a lapel camera revealed he tased and kicked a suspect. Two other officers have been administratively reassigned.

The investigation comes as the department is under scrutiny by community advocates who have called for a Department of Justice investigation into use of force by APD officers.  25 people have been shot by officers since 2010.  17 of them died from their wounds.
