Songwriters Kristina Jacobsen & Meredith Wilder have performed in support of each other's work for many years, but with the inaugural Songs from the Rez Artists' Retreat their collaboration as songwriters was born.

 They dropped by KUNM to play songs from their new ep "Elemental," an album recorded in a Colorado cabin. Recorded in Studio C by Matthew Finch in February, 2018 (& 2017 for an early version of "Leave Home to Come Home"), the musicians are: Meredith Wilder: vocals, acoustic guitar

Silver String Band

In this feature we catch up with Albuquerque's Silver String Band.  The 5-piece features string players known locally for work in Peg Leg Joe, Squash Blossom Boys & other ensembles, but it's the musical restlessness of this group that marks them as something new.

The leaves were already falling last October when Thursday "All That Jazz" host Mark Weber invited local Jazz luminaries Lewis Winn (Albuquerque) & Milo Jaramillo (Isleta Pueblo) to come up for some impromptu duets, beginning the live broadcast with the classic "Autumn Leaves."

 Performed live on-air on October 26, 2017 & engineered by Mark Weber the players are: Lewis Winn: Langston AlphacasterMilo Jaramillo: 5-string bass Both players can be found in multiple ensembles around New Mexico, Winn most notably in the Alpha Cats, Jaramillo in the trio Red Hot & Red.


This feature spotlights the music of Tin Pan Alley as performed by The Muldawers (Banjo Judy & Michael) for their new CD "Back In Time."  The duo give a pocket history lesson in the roots of American Pop Music & season the proceedings with live performances.  They also talk briefly about the work in senior homes & hospitals, as well as Judy's work holding free ukulele sessions in Albuquerque libraries & the Watermelon Music space.

For this Thanksgiving Weekend feature we assembled live recordings from singer-songwriter Boris McCutcheon's last two visits plus a solo acoustic gem from 2010.

The Dogbone Trio

The Dogbone Trio is a 26-footed instrumental outfit best found on early morning dog walks.  This feature captures the Trio (sans canines) in what was then their ninth performance ever, rehearsals included, mixing composed originals, covers & improvisations.

On May 23rd, Albuquerque's Cactus Tractor came by to offer an acoustic preview of two very different projects.  After playing a pair of newly-written songs the band peeled back the curtain on their upcoming re-make of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."  In between they talk about approaching the Beatles landmark album by starting with the original charts & orchestration.

Tonight's feature performance -- the first of two -- is a Studio A session with Fred Johnson.  This trio of long-time Albuquerque musicians came together strictly for the joy of playing, but quickly found themselves inside a sound that could adapt to multiple musical styles, including some of their own back catalog songs.

Cali Shaw and Friends

This session features Albuquerque musicians Cali Shaw, Zack Freeman and Julian Wild in an impromptu performance/conversation.

Songwriter Shaw was invited to curate the October edition of  the NM Song Swap hosted by the "Art of the Song" program.  For this edition, Shaw reached beyond the singer/songwriter pool to include vocalist/beatboxer/MC Freeman along with Wild, leader of the "alt-everything" group Wild Humans.   The scheduled Song Swap will also include Eileen and the In-Betweens leader Eileen Shaughnessy.

Recorded in Studio C on October 10 the musicians are:

On September 23rd and 24th the ¡Globalquerque! Festival of World Music and Culture returned to the National Hispanic Cultural Center for its 12th year, and for the 12th year KUNM was there to broadcast the musical performances.

This year's 5 hour broadcast featured concerts from the Journal Theater and the Main Stage, but that was hardly enough time to capture the full scope of these artists. 

Below are the full sessions with only slight editing. They were engineered and mixed for broadcast by Roman Garcia, Ethan Stein and Marshall Broyles.
