An Obituary for Cecilio Garcia Camarillo
Cecilio Garcia-Camarillo, a poet, publisher and pioneer in Chicano literature, died of cancer at his Albuquerque home on Wednesday, January 16, 2002.
Garcia-Camarillo, 58, was one of the founding poets of the Chicano cultural renaissance of the 1960’s, an editor and publisher of three literary magazines, a playwright and an artist.
A cultural attach„ at the Mexican consulate in Albuquerque and for many years hosted a weekly radio program, “Espejos de Aztlan,” on KUNM.
Garcia-Camarillo was born in Laredo Texas, and moved to Albuquerque in 1977. He is survived by his daughters Cielo Garcia of Greensboro, N.C., and Karina Garcia of san Francisco; and a son, Itzolin Garcia of San Francisco.
“The community was very important to him, and his children,” said Cielo Garcia. “He took great pride in being a tremendous father and pretty much built his life around being a good father to us and to giving back with his writing.”
About a month before he died, she said her father quoted to the three children, “con los pies en la tierra y el corazon lleno de esperanza” – with your feet on the ground and your heart full of hope.
“To us it meant there was still hope - you have to be realistic, but you always have hope.” Her father was “a tremendously honorable man,” she said. “He was very grateful to be able to die at home. He was at peace.”
