The annual Kids Count report for New Mexico will be released Thursday morning at the state capitol. The data does not include the worst of the ongoing recession but it does show times are tough for children in the state.
Chris Hollis, Kids Count director for New Mexico Voices for Children, says children depend on programs currently being debated in the state legislative session. Hollis says four key program areas that need for the most continuing support include early childhood care and education, a strong graduation rate, comprehensive health care and the system of family supports like food stamps and the Earned Income Tax Credit.
Supporting programs that benefit children and families is a sound investment for the state, Hollis says, because kids become more successful citizens that earn more, are healthier, pay more taxes and commit fewer crimes.
New Mexico remains among the lowest ranked states for child well-being. |
