The findings of this year's KIDS COUNT Data Book show New Mexico's kids are moving up, but there's still plenty of work to do. The report shows the state improved from 48th to 43rd in overall child well-being.
The report also indicates improvements in the state’s infant mortality rate, the number of teens attending school and the child death rate.
Christine Hollis, Kids Count director with New Mexico Voices for Children, says some of the credit for the improvements goes to recent policy changes that made more New Mexico families eligible for child care assistance, and added more kids to the rolls of state health coverage programs.
However, Hollis says the state still needs to update the federal formula for determining the poverty level. And Hollis says the data doesn’t reflect the current recession.

HOLLIS: "Even though we have made some progress, it's not the time - despite the recession - to be cutting back, we need to really hang on to the gains that we've made."
According to the report, released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, New Mexico still struggles with other problems including the second-highest teen birth rate and one quarter of children living in poverty. |
