Report: Medicaid Helped New Mexico Economy Grow
* Airdate: Fri., 10 Oct. 2008
New Mexicans concerned with government spending may actually be benefiting from it. According to a recent report from the Fiscal Policy Project, a program of New Mexico Voices for children, Medicaid has helped the states economy grow.

Gerry Bradley is the research director for New Mexico Voices for Children. He says Medicaid has contributed significantly to the state’s economy.

Listen

However, Bradley says, the current downturn in the U.S economy may effect the amount of money the state receives from the federal government. For every dollar New Mexico spends on Medicaid, the government spends two dollars and fifty cents.

He says New Mexico Voices for Children would like to see the federal match increase even more.

Listen

Bradley says regular checkups for children and prenatal care funded by Medicaid help keep families healthy and lower health care costs overall in the state.
