Socorro Romo was born to a Mexican American mother and a Mexican immigrant father in the central San Joaquin valley of California. Her work is strongly immersed in her cultural roots where singing, dancing, and color are encouraged. Thus, her upcycled jackets are draped in ceremony, as some stiches and strokes of paint carry positive memories and intentions for the next wearer. Every applique or additional fabric is smudged before being applied, and upon completion the entire jacket is smudged before being released to "el mundo." Some jackets may be years in process. Her works have been displayed locally at the South Broadway Cultural Center and the Hispanic Arts Building at Expo NM, as well as at a fundraiser in Nashville, TN.
